Security Switchers and Multiplexers

In the past, video switchers and multiplexers were used to simultaneously view multiple cameras on a single display and allow the recording of multiple cameras on a single VCR tape. Multiplexers are still used today; however, this technology is now embedded in most DVRs and NVRs utilizing software to display & record the camera feeds. In the past, Multiplexers viewed more cameras at once than just software based systems, but that is also no longer the case. With some manufacturers current software you can choose how many (up to 16 or more) and which cameras to view at once. You can also group them in the same fashion and recall these groups at any time.

On a side note about the embedded software, most are also capable of sending email alerts when specified events occur, throttle bandwidth usage of chosen cameras during peak and off hours and video analytics (see our choosing the right dvr section for more info), to name a few key features.
