Choosing a Security DVR

Several factors are critical to consider when choosing your next DVR purchase. A few would be: type of cameras (Analog or Network), number of cameras, resolution, frames per second rate, and desired recording capability before deletion. All of these factors are interrelated and determine the size, in Gigabytes, needed.

Below is a helpful example:

As shown, storage space requirements increase with the number of cameras. Another factor to consider when choosing a security DVR is how many frames per second you are recording. For this example we are capturing 15fps; real time is 30fps.

Evaluating the DVR’s management and viewings software is also important. Most software allows you to view multiple images at once and control the video timeline to find a desired event. Additionally, companies like Honeywell are adding video analytics to their software suite. Video analytics allow you to count objects or people, determine direction and speed of travel, evaluate suspicious movements, etc.

Consider these factors when selecting your next DVR and contact us if you have any questions.
