How to Choose Your Ethernet Switch
Choosing an Ethernet switch is rapidly becoming a simple process for CCTV integrators because the new Network cameras do not require a proprietary switch. Essentially, you can choose any off-the-shelf switch that meets your requirements.
Consider the following:
- Number of ports needed (number of IP Cameras or number of CAT5 cable runs)
- Bandwidth speed 1000/100/10 Mbps
- Virtually all switches are now equipped with port forwarding and speed negotiation
- As these products are always in use reliability is a main factor (IE: Linksys business products have a lifetime warranty)
- PoE (Power over Ethernet) capability, if you’re using IP Cameras this is a necessity
